Heritage Projects

… researching and sharing our history

‘Linskill Life’

Heritage Lottery funding (2014/15) enabled the community to research, document and archive Linskill School’s history, from its opening in 1932 to its closure in 1984. The Linskill Life project invited past pupils and school staff to share their school photos, press cuttings, school memorabilia and share memories and anecdotes about life at Linskill. This enabled the school’s history to be captured and conserved and the community’s relationship with the school celebrated. The project also revisited a 1949 film of Linskill Girls School entitled, ‘Life at Linskill’, to create a new film that recaptured the era. View excerpts or the original 1949 film and the new film via the following links:

  • A 1950’s film commemorating Tynemouth Centenary (a civic event held in the recently opened new boys school part of the building).
  • New film made 2016 called “Linskill Life”. Intergenerational film created by ACT2CAM with past pupils from the original 1949 film.
  • HLF evaluation report illustrating the project, what it achieved and how it celebrated school life.

‘Linskill’s Life after School’

This second Heritage Lottery funded project (2017/18), researched and captured community involvement with the centre following the school’s closure in 1984 to the present day. Under the direction of project co-ordinator Cath Walshaw, heritage volunteers enabled local people to contribute their memories, anecdotes and memorabilia reflecting their Linskill Centre years. Past employees, present staff, volunteers and community users, spanning over 30 years, have shared their Linskill experiences with the project. ‘Linskill’s Life after School’ was celebrated through: new music, creation of a Linskill soundscape, visual timeline and displays of photographs and documents over a three day open exhibition event in June 2018.

View material from the exhibition and listen to Linskill Community Choir’s performance from the celebratory event (coming soon).
