Poppies at Preston Cemetery

By 6th November 2018 No Comments

The Linskill engAGE project was launched in 2016 to provide opportunities for the older community (55+) to share and learn new skills, keep active and healthy, and make new friends. The Woolies is one of the latest groups to join the engAGE programme and it all started because someone wanted to learn how to crochet. Now the group gather on a Wednesday from 10am-12noon and produce knitted and crocheted goods, often for local causes and initiatives – call 0191 257 8000 or email charlotte@linskill.org for more information

Earlier this year the Woolies were approached by the Northumbria World War One Commemoration Project to help make 500 poppies to decorate the gates of Preston Cemetery in North Shields to remember the lives of the local men lost in the war. The group took on the challenge and after encouraging others to join in, they have produced over 2,000 poppies – far exceeding their original target and contributing to an emotive display of remembrance for Armistice Day.
