We work with our community to make facilities and businesses more sustainable, reducing waste and increasing engagement.

There are 6 strands to the Trust’s environmental commitments.

  • Energy Management
  • Water Minimisation
  • Biodiversity
  • Waste Minimisation
  • Sustainable Transport
  • Environmental Awareness

Community Recycling Services at Linskill
We’re proud to support local recycling efforts in partnership with North Tyneside Council. You can bring your small electrical items, batteries, and vapes to the Linskill Centre for recycling. These services help keep hazardous materials out of landfill and make it easier for our community to recycle responsibly.

Our Achievements So Far

Energy Management & Water Minimisation

We are committed to continuously improving our environmental performance and have replaced inefficient heating systems and continuously review our energy consumption across the three community facilities. We have installed a number of renewables across all three sites, therefore reducing our carbon footprint. These improvements include:

  • 4 new energy efficient boilers
  • 2 air source heat pumps
  • Replacement of 1930s heating pipework
  • Over 400 LED lights
  • Installation of 204 solar PV panels
  • Roof insulation and suspended ceilings
  • Other heat loss measures such as double glazing and specialised window film

Water consumption costs are fully considered in our decision-making process to purchase new equipment, and rainwater is collected in water butts across the Linskill Centre grounds for conservation and reuse of water.

Solar PV Panel Installation

118 additional panels were installed at the Linskill Centre in early 2025 thanks to support from Big Issue Invest and BEST grant funding from UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund with the North East Combined Authority and Gateshead Council.

This financial support has enabled our charity to continue with our renewable energy efforts. The ripple effect of this will make a positive impact on many people in our community.

The upgrades will save us nearly £14,000 annually, freeing up resources for our impactful work.

Our Achievements So Far

Biodiversity Plan

Linskill Trust has a wide and varied range of trees and landscaped grounds. These are significant assets and provide unique opportunities for social, environmental, visual, educational and recreational use.

30 trees have been planted across the Linskill Centre in recent years, including different varieties of Cherry, Rowen, Crab and eating apples, Hawthorn and Hazel; replacing storm damaged or diseased trees.

Man Outside Gardening

Our Achievements So Far

Waste Minimisation

The Shedders and gardeners reclaim and re-purpose materials.

Compost bins are located in the Community Upcycle garden and volunteers produce their own mulch and compost from garden waste for use in the gardens.

We recycle green waste whenever possible, ensure regular litter picking, and only use substances that are not harmful to our community (COSHH). and encourage community learning through Forest School and Community Development programmes.

Sufficient recycling facilities are available throughout all three sites to appropriately recycle items that cannot be reused, and other measure have been implemented such as reused stationary and removing single use plastic and plastic PPE aprons in our catering function.

Environmental Awareness

We are thrilled to collaborate and support the ‘No Time For Waste’ event, an annual family event which aims to help people live and shop in a more planet-friendly way.

The event, organised by Jackie Sewell and her daughter Rachel, founders of the plastic-free and zero-waste shop Buy The Kilo, in Tynemouth Metro Station, is a celebration of the resilience of small eco-friendly businesses in the area, especially after lockdown, but also a chance for people to talk about a greener way of life.
