North Shields History Comes to Life at the Linskill Centre

A stunning new art installation celebrating 800 years of North Shields history has found a permanent home at the Linskill Centre.
Local artist Conrad Milne’s remarkable work, North Shields: 800 Years in the Making, has been installed outside the Mitford Room, where its seven large-scale panels now face the Memorial Garden in a setting that feels both historically resonant and deeply fitting.
Created as part of the NS800 celebrations marking the town’s 800th anniversary, the artwork weaves together eight centuries of North Shields history through layered images, maps, words and poetry. The panels incorporate photographs by award-winning photographer Hazel Plater and draw on extensive historical research by historian David Scholey, making this far more than a visual piece — it is a record of a community and the story of a place.
Having previously been displayed at the Three Tanners Pub, North Shields Library, and the Beacon Centre, the work now has a permanent home here at the Linskill Centre — a building that is itself a part of North Shields history, and a living hub for today’s community.
Linskill Lates: Meet the Artist — Monday 13 July, 6–7pm
To mark the installation, we are hosting a very special Linskill Lates evening on Monday 13 July, 6–7pm, giving guests the opportunity to meet Conrad in person and hear about the creative process, research, and inspiration behind this unique project.
The event is completely free and includes complimentary light refreshments — and we are delighted to say it is fully booked, a wonderful reflection of just how much this work means to the people of North Shields.
Guests will have the chance to view the newly installed panels up close and explore eight centuries of their town’s story through Conrad’s extraordinary vision.

The installation is now on permanent display at the Linskill Centre, Linskill Terrace, North Shields, NE30 2AY, and can be viewed during our normal opening hours — free of charge.
